Teaming Up To Eradicate Child Blindness
Since 1994, The Vitamin Angel Alliance, a non-profit, non-sectarian organization, has been working to fight malnutrition around the world.
Together We Can Make A Difference
The leading health risk in the world, accounting for more deaths each year than cancer, AIDS, or heart disease, is lack of food. Children are particularly susceptible to malnutrition, and more than 100 million children suffer each year from Vitamin A deficiency. As a result, this year, more than 4,000,000 children will go blind in third world countries. 500,000 of these children will completely lose their vision and half of those will go on to die of simple infections and diseases.
Helping At-Risk Populations in Need
Vitamin Angels helps at-risk populations in need—specifically pregnant women, new mothers, and children under five—gain access to lifesaving and life changing vitamins and minerals. In 2014, Vitamin Angels is working to reach 40 million children in about 45 countries, including the US, with the vital nutrients they need as a foundation for good health. Vitamin Angels has received seven consecutive four-star ratings from Charity Navigator for Financial Health, Accountability and Transparency. To learn more, visit www.vitaminangels.com.
A letter from Howard B. Schiffer, President of Vitamin Angels
"Hi Jahn - We just returned from a trip to Bolivia observing vitamin A distributions. The third day out we were slashing through grass that covered our Land Rover and made the road completely invisible. The reality of how impassable these roads would become once the rainy season began was immediately obvious. We also knew why Pauline, a mother we met that day, had lost her baby and why three adolescents from Lagunillas, Rosemary, Marybel and Jose had lost their mom during childbirth three years ago. There is no medical help, no electricity, no running water and the poverty is extreme in these villages. I want to thank you again for helping us reach these children. When we're out in these remote areas, hours away from even the most basic of resources, the reality of 'reaching the unreachable' takes on a whole new meaning. We could not do this work without your support. On behalf of the children, we thank you. Upwards!"

Fighting Hunger and touching lives, Island Harvest — Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization — serves as the bridge between those who have surplus food and those who need it. Their volunteers and staff "rescue," or collect, good surplus food from over 600 local restaurants, caterers, farms, and other food-related businesses; and distribute it to a network of close to 500 soup kitchens, food pantries, and other places where those in need can access it. They also conduct educational programs to increase hunger awareness and inform the public how they can get involved in their mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island.
